  DENVER — As President Obama signed the $787 billion stimulus bill into law Tuesday, he also kicked off a new and even more challenging sales job — convincing Americans there’s light at the end of the current economic tunnel. “We have begun the essential work of keeping the American dream alive,” he declared before putting his pen to the 1,434-page American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. “I don’t want to pretend that this marks the end of our economic problems. ... Today does mark the beginning of the end.” In a 22-minute speech, Obama warned of “hazards and reverses” the economy will still face. His spokesman Robert Gibbs signaled Obama is open to a second stimulus package, though no plans are in the works. But after several weeks stressing grim economic statistics and warning of economic “catastrophe” if the stimulus failed to pass, Obama signaled Tuesday that he is approaching a rhetorical pivot point — talking the economy up instead of down. In his remarks, Obama projected an air of confidence. “We will leave the struggling economy behind us and come out more prosperous,” he vowed. The delicacy of the rhetorical pirouette Obama needs to make was underscored Tuesday by more objective indicators that the economy remains in serious distress. As Obama arrived in Denver, the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down nearly 300 points and was within about 150 points of the ten-year low it reached in November.
